CHECK YOUR COMPASS, AMERICA
Too often change comes as a shock, an uncomfortable surprise and though it clearly has happened and change has arrived, it often becomes something to oppose. I see this happening daily as we ignore the fact our economy has changed from Industrial Corporate Capitalism to International Corporate Capitalism .In our consistent refusal to deal with this reality, we poison our present and condemn our future. Many of us around the globe still don’t know where we are. A while ago, the President of France addressed Congress. President Macron spoke of the “international community”. These simple words bring terror to the right and even to many on the leftt.

Coping with Captain Queeg at the helm
Our democratic republic has been undermined, in the glaring light of day, on a world stage, by the very individual who has taken a sacred oath to do the complete opposite of those brazen, treasonable acts of trashing our faithful allies and cuddling up to our sworn enemy.

“Ridi, Pagliaccio …” – “laugh, Clown, laugh,”
So goes the opera, “I Pagliacci.”
We Americans, too clever by half, helplessly are caught in the headlights of the unimaginable antics of our own, (maybe lawfully) elected clown.

One of the advantages of being old is that you can clearly remember a different world when ideals like democracy, fairness, and justice were honored as national values and a source of American pride. In the 1950’s the whole concept of American ideals were not simply overused cliches or a vision of history that blinded us to this nation’s wrongs. Americans were primed to believe this was what we struggled to be. You see, this was the nature of the propaganda that mobilized an unprepared nation to fight the forces of fascism-- we were better, we were the good guys, we believed in justice and liberty for all.

A friend asked:
“Which do you think is the best course of action for the long-term health of Puerto Rico: maintaining the status quo, becoming a U.S. State, or declaring independence from the United States?”

DKD, the mysterious three,
All met in Singapore.
Donald rushed in;
Kim faked, “Thin”;
And Dennis, the tattooed whore.
DKD, the mysterious three,
All have in common this:
Donald likes Den;
Kim likes Den;
And Dennis in Nubian bliss.

Congratulations, NRA, your tenacity in standing your ground and relinquishing not an inch of obstinacy in the face of the most horrendous, senseless, peacetime slaughter of children, women and men going about their daily lives, in such a constant, ominous drumbeat, can now be adjudged a resounding success..

I haven’t written a piece in a while because, well, I have been discouraged and frustrated and sad. It’s difficult to watch family and friends struggle. I wish I could just shrug my shoulders and, ‘meh, not my problem’, move on. I can’t. I wish I had the ability to ‘not care’, but I do care and I care a lot. For most of my life I just watched and absorbed what was happening around me, crying silently into my pillow, hiding in books, immersing myself in movies, kept my eyes averted and focused on my job and raising my family. That kept me busy enough to bury all the sadness really, really deep. Sure there would be moments when I allowed myself to cry when no one else was around or fake it when I got caught; “It’s just allergies.” Folks, I just can’t do it anymore. When you make the decision to involve yourself in your community, whether it be through volunteering at the homeless shelter or devoting time at the local school or even become involved in the local (and national) political world- well, you can no longer pretend that there are not lots and lots of people out there who are really hurting. Hurting badly. Once you know, once you see it; you can’t un-know it. At least I can’t. Here is what I can’t un-see and what I especially cannot un-feel. Damn, how I wish I could un-feel it. But for me there is no way to ignore what is – out there.

Although we finicky Westerners find the Russian game of, “Don’t Hide and Go B-e-e-e-p” or, “Gat in the Mouth” – or, whatever – to be reprehensible, outright, political murder, or an attempt thereof, Russia has been at this for five centuries. That is why Vladimir Putin and the Kremlinites find it so tiresome when we fail to go along with the game and annoyingly question their preposterous responses and faux-innocent faces. “It’s just, ‘Cosa Nostra Ruska,’ fer Pete’s sake!”

Basta! Enough! We’ve reached MLK’s, “Mountaintop.” Let him be. Let’s get to work!
Moses had roamed the desert for 40 years with his formerly enslaved people. After descending the mountain with his God-fire-inscribed stones and demolishing the notion of Golden Calf worship, wearily he sat and commanded: “Go! Here I remain. Milk and honey await you on the other side of yon mountain.”
