A House Divided

Written by: Deborah Baron

It’s been a rough year. On top of whatever personal tribulations we experience we are living in a time of tremendous conflict; tribal identities are really strong and it feels like a molten lava of human emotion could explode at any moment into a volcano of civil violence. The reasons for this sense of pending social eruption are many; race tension, poverty, financial insecurity, environmental extremes and the future does seem dark. Do we each live in our own microcosm of the larger world? I think so, I think that what happens in my village also happens in your town because humans are fundamentally similar in our behaviors and reactions to the world around us. I am concerned about my village. In my version of America I am experiencing a disturbing clannish conflict. I am probably going to piss some people off but here goes:

General John J. Pershing, Commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in France during WWI, authorized a secret communique to be delivered to our French allies. This disturbing description of a disturbed nation is pasted here below. As you will see, my medical terminology is appropriate – it is also as scary as hell!

“STRANGE FRUIT” TREES TO, “AUTUMN LEAVES”?

Written by: Curtis W. Long

The polling places stormed will be,
As autumn wanes, this year.
Two southern states, perhaps, may see
Two leaves of color queer.

The many artists fall does bring
To set the leaves ablaze,
Just may decide to do their thing –
And, this time, all amaze.

The View From The North

Canada, our neighbor to the north and my place of birth, is a country that is almost our twin, we have the same background, the same type of demographics, the same type of history and a similar type of government. On my recent vacation I interacted with my large extended family and met some new faces. What follows are my reflections, I do not suggest that ALL Canadians feel this way. Despite what many Americans believe, Canadians aren’t really very fond of Americans, we are viewed more like an over bearing older brother. Canadians tolerate us but also whisper behind our back. My recent visit confirmed that impression, in fact, I think Canadian disdain for America has grown. Canadian women especially have a more negative view of Trump's America with just 38 percent holding a favorable view of America, down 32 percentage points from 2012. In case you haven’t figured it out, this increase in lack of respect comes from our president. NEVER in all my interactions with my Canadian family and friends was I ever asked about politics, never before was I asked who I voted for or how I felt about the current political climate in the US the way I was in my recent visit. When re-engaging with my relatives the question of who I voted for came up, cautiously, “So, how do you feel about your president?” I responded quickly with, “I hate him and didn’t vote for him.” The sense of relief on their part after my answer was palpable. We didn’t discuss Reagan, Bushs’ or Clinton in the past.

Uncle Sam

CRAZY OLD UNCLE IN THE CELLAR

Written by: Curtis W. Long
Category: Politics
Published: August 06, 2018

The Uncle Sam we like to show off – long before he dressed in red, white and blue – is that benevolent, avuncular soul who encompasses all that is good and decent; all that is righteous and upstanding; all that is fair and uplifting; all that is human and above reproach. While our show-off Uncle Sam is all of that on the surface, he has an evil twin we keep locked in the cellar, who possesses the opposite of all the glorious qualities we attribute to Good Sam. Once in a while, Just as Good Sam is attempting to regale visitors with stories on how nice it is to reside in the bright, shiny city on the hill, Bad Old Sam will break out and spoil the party. He is forced back down into the cellar, of course, but dammit, no matter how large the lock, he finds some way to escape, just as tea is being served!

What’s with this grand ballet between Vlad and Don?
The ballet is Russian, but Don has caught on.

Vlad – sometimes, “The Impaler” – is primer danseur, of course.
Terpsichore’s quiet, but she is the source.

Following the latest NATO-gnashing; the Helsinki hullabaloo; the two-faced tergiversation; and the intolerable invitation; Trump’s predecessors, from FDR on, have found it necessary to weigh in on the first Fifth Column ever organized in the very Oval Office itself!

TICK TOCK TICK TOCK

Written by: Bent Lorentzen

Published: July 26, 2018

"All the President's Men" has grown bizarre and dangerous beyond anything from Nixon. That was a very different Congress and set of circumstances back then, in a country rather fed up with its youth dying in such a proxy war. Since Reagan, the GOP has slowly grown into a group seeking a theocracy hell bent on dismantling the intent and spirit of the US Constitution to bow to the golden calf, to use the myth with which it's justified. Moses never existed. The golden calf has been extant and only worshiped ever more vigorously since the mythological time ascribed to Moses, and now sits in the altar of the minds of those empowering the chaos of Trump. The paradox is intentionally shrouded in the enigma.
