First they Came For..............
Do you know that poem written by Pastor Martin Niemöller? He wrote it due to his experiences in Nazi Germany. He spent most of WWII as a POW, 1937 thru 1945, confined in Sachsenhausen and Dachau. It is a statement about the dangers of political apathy.

I need to vent...
You know, we always hear about the "rules" of relationships - generally from the female side. Well, I think that we guys should state, for the record, the rules from the male side. (And yes, I'm gonna speak for all of us). Here goes:

"I'm a hopeaholic." Said Gloria Steinem. I like that word- hopeaholic. It describes me, no matter how disturbing or depressing the news gets, I don't feel down for long. I can't help myself. I return to my, "Things will get better." mentality quickly. I'm a hopeaholic also and to be in Ms. Steinem's company is pretty good company. During her interview with Oprah recently I realized I admire her as much today as I did 30 plus years ago. She is 81 and feels like she has not accomplished enough- that she still has so much more work to do.

There have been new discoveries in the Alzheimer's world in the past couple of years, encouraging and exciting discoveries, maybe the aging generation of today may not have to suffer the terrible plight of Alzheimer's and dementia. It may not be a part of your life now but at the moment it is projected to be one of the top 5 illnesses of seniors, ahead of heart disease. There are many horrible illnesses that affect humans but this is one of the worst in my mind because you die before your body does. Hopefully, the cure is just on the horizon. The following is my own personal journey through the Mordor of Alzheimer's. It is mine and does not reflect anyone else's. The symptoms and conditions of the disease can affect others in different ways, emotionally and physically. Some people and caregivers are more able to cope than others. I do not judge those that determine 24 hour facilities are right or those that choose to work and hire in-home help or stay home to care for a loved one. The variables change from family to family. The solutions one family chooses are not superior to another's. We choose the path that is right for us. Maybe you are at the beginning of the journey, in the middle or you know someone who is, I hope that you take away from this how wide path the Alzheimer's takes and it is not just the patient who suffers but all of those in their life become affected. I hope you take away the challenges caregivers face and that you understand the urgency for a cure.

The problem with Alzheimer's is the general public thinks of it as 'the memory disease'. I thought the same thing until it touched my family. Alzheimer's is really about the brain shutting the brain down one section at a time, sometimes a small part, other times a large section, randomly with no warning, so that eventually the brain tells the body to stop talking, stop walking, stop eating and finally to stop breathing.

(This visually
impaired writer teaches Spanish at the San Diego Braille Institute for the Blind. One of the group, a lady from Greece, whose mother was Swiss, allowed us to include French in the class. Quite suddenly, she was taken from us. This is a tribute.)

There is a perpetual dichotomy between Love and Death – "I could just love him/her to death!" But, who knew they were in competition with each other?
The Grim Reaper and Cupid met at a crossroad. Old Grim said, Howdy, while tightening his grip on the scythe. Delicately, Cupid muttered something, as his hand instinctively reached for the quiver. This was uncharted; they knew of each other's existence, but this was a twain that never should have met.
