I learned to swim at about the age of seven. The little town in Nebraska where I grew up had a free learn to swim program at the YMCA. About five of my pals and I took the lessons. The final was to swim from one end of the pool and back. We all made it. And received our Tadpole Certificate.
Little did I know at the time that this is probably one of the most important things I learned to do as a kid. That it would benefit me all the way through life. Especially during those long, hot, humid summer days.
Now for the real reason learning how to swim was so important. It’s getting hotter and hotter. Polar ice caps are melting at an alarming rate. Glaciers are disappearing. It seems the oceans are rising. Weather patterns are shifting. If you haven’t noticed…
In 2014 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change proclaimed that they were in about 95% agreement that greenhouse gases and human activities are the cause. “Human Activities?” Now I’ve heard that some of our more illustrious members of congress say that this isn’t true. Over 50% of these publicly elected officials think global climate change is nonsense. Over 50%! Are you kidding me!? And they were voted into office. What’s that tell you about their respective constituencies? I’m not sure these members of congress have been outside their controlled environments at the capitol. I’m not sure about their constituents either.
I get a little nervous when the pro global warming researchers say that we have until maybe 2050 to turn things around. Do we? How can that be predicted? To claim a certain year that we need to have all of our ducks in order. (Ducks do know how to swim from the minute they crack open their little eggs.) I personally believe that there are just too many unknown factors that need to be included to determine that year, what they are I have no idea, that’s not my specialty.
The land grab in Ukraine (what a nightmare in itself); all of the gold the drug cartel guys can stash away; all of the religious conflicts around the world - don’t mean a thing if you’re standing waist deep in water.
Global warming. It’s real.
