Lisa opened her eyes to the hazy grey of a Florida morning. Like the varied instruments of an orchestra slowly coming to life, one by one the woodland voices came to her ears. Grimacing, she pushed aside long, loose strands of black hair and looked up. A few stars beyond a tapestry of pink clouds still shone behind the dark canopy of her tree.

Maeldom candidus rex (MCR) had ruled a great portion of Planet Thrae since time immemorial. It had not always been that way, but with the passage of time, MCR was able to attach to his blanched exterior an arbitrarily, high social value of superiority. The genus dom candidus (DC) had evolved upon the planet just as the rest of those of the rex species. These had developed into groups of individuals with varied-hued exteriors.

April fog shrouded the Strait of Gibraltar as the ferry boat chugged along on its route from the south of Spain to the northern shore of the African continent. Visibility was considerably curtailed, and the constant blaring of the foghorns wore upon her nerves. She sat alone, and apart, from the other passengers. In another Moslem setting, a woman traveling alone, and berobed in flowing, colorful raiment would be a scandal (if not a crime), and not merely a curiosity. But this Moroccan princess had been educated abroad, and was accustomed to traveling around the world on her own. In this particular situation, however, her normal self-assurance was being imperceptively betrayed by the raucous wrenching of the foghorns. The cause of her consternation was the bauble with which she constantly and nervously toyed. It was attached to a chain of fine gold, which hung conspicuously from her neck.

Garrison circled FBT grounds via the adjoining properties. Behind a thicket of bamboo across from a loading dock, he watched as a cafeteria employee and a truck driver off-loaded a delivery of foodstuffs. When their dolly tipped over and the men stooped to retrieve the spillage, he dashed across the dock and into the building.

Kane relaxed behind his desk. A more perfect conclusion to his troubles was hard to imagine. It may have been slightly more desirable to have secured the boy, Noah, in lieu of Nachtmann. Children are more complaisant, after all, and acting as the boy’s regent would have given Kane absolute power over the trust for many years. Still, disposal of the child’s parents may have been messy. On balance, therefore, Kane felt quite satisfied with the day’s outcome.
