Tommy-Dodson

In this third edition of songs from our one-man musical, “Blues Booze and Attitude,” Tommy Dodson, as Thad Johnson/Spats Dollar, bounces from the church right back into the devil’s playground of Ma Danner’s sinful, gentlemen’s parlor.

This time, with Ma Danner’s girls feeling a little skittish, alter ego Thad Johnson sends along an idea that echoes from the New Testament. Fats Dollar gingerly mixes in the reporting of the Apostles with modern political philosophy, as he sings, “Jesus Was a Liberal.”

In the meantime, in real life, Tommy Dodson, the third personality in this trio of, “Pie-anner plunkers,”  still holds down the cat-bird seat at Stacey’s Piano Bar in Palm Springs. He is there on Friday and Sunday nights, from 7 to 11 p.m.

Here are my lyrics for, “Jesus Was a Liberal”:

JESUS WAS A LIBERAL

Jesus was a liberal.
A left-wing Jew was he.
He fought a right-wing establishment,
As all good liberals do.

Jesus was a liberal.
A righteous Jew was he.
He sought neither war nor banishment,
But to lift up the Hebrew.

This rabbi was scorned for the habit
Of giving medical aid.
For tasks he performed, frog and rabbit
Thereto no donation made.

Jesus was a liberal.
He severed church from state,
While championing freedom of worship—
As well as love over hate.

Yes, Jesus was a liberal.
That means change was his goal.
His presence on earth was a mere blip,
But “liberal’ haunts the soul.
