I keep hoping to see on your wall that you have changed your mind about him, but still you have not, still you support him. I try to understand why and come up empty handed. Well, not completely empty- I see a nebulous, dark film of slimy hate pulsing in my hand. He continues to say hateful things and I think, "this time he has gone too far." But no, he has not, still you cling to him.
First he insulted a female journalist, and you did not speak out—
Because you are not a female journalist.
("She had blood coming out of her eyes, she had blood coming out of her wherever.")
Then he insulted the BLM activist, and you did not speak out—
Because you not a BLM activist.
Then he insulted the Muslims, and you did not speak out—
Because you are not a Muslim.
(Asked if he would implement a data base system for tracking Muslims, Trump said, "I would certainly implement that. Absolutely." Trump said in Newton, Iowa, in between campaign town halls.)
Then he insulted the Sikhs, and you did not speak out—
Because you are not a Sikh.
(Trump called out to the man, a protester wearing a turban with a sign reading "Stop Hate" as he was escorted away by security. "He wasn't wearing one of those hats was he? And he never will, and that's OK because we got to do something folks because it's not working.")
Then he insulted you, and you still did not speak out—
Because you don't know history.
(Trump said, "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters.")
Then he will come for you—and there will be no one left to speak for you.
I have taken the liberty of modifing Paster Martin Niemöller's famous speech. He composed it after he was released from a concentration camp. For his opposition to the Nazis' state control of the churches, Niemöller was imprisoned in Sachsenhausen and Dachau concentration camps from 1937 to 1945. He narrowly escaped execution and survived imprisonment. After his imprisonment, he expressed his deep regret about not having done enough to help the victims of the Nazis. My hope is that I have touched a part of you that will change your mind about him. I know you are really a kind, good person inside.
